Generators

Proper Installation
During a power outage nothing gives you a better feeling than knowing you have a generator. While generators can be convenient, they can also be dangerous if not installed properly. The Village of Webster has provided these guidelines to help residents in determining the proper installation requirement for home generators.
  • For more information go to   the RG&E website:www.rge.com/UsageAndSafety/electricalsafety/generatorsafety.html

The Village Code
Residential generators are not specifically addressed in the Village code. While this may be the case, the Village enforces the NYS Residential and Commercial code both of which govern the application and installation of home and business generators.

The Permit Process
Generator permits are required prior to installation. The following items are needed with the application:
  • A survey of your property
  • On the survey show approximate location of generator placement
  • Cost of permit
  • Contractor’s insurance information
  • Generator/transfer switch documentation
  • RG&E Gas Appliance Inventory sheet
Once these items are received and reviewed, your permit will be processed.

Inspections
After the generator is installed an electrical inspection by an electrical inspection agency and final inspection by the Village is required to verify compliance with all applicable codes. Please notify the Building Department and allow 24 hour notice for inspection when installation is complete.
